Description

Occupied since pre-Roman times, much of Civita Falconara dates back to the medieval period. Only at the base of the walls can you find traces of the original Volsco settlement. And of course the decoration of the most impressive buildings owes much to the great wealth of Arpino during the 1800s. But the winding alleys and stone buildings that climb on top of each other on the hillside are mostly medieval in character. Dating back to 1800, the 240 sqm. The spacious Melody Apartment is located on the edge of this neighborhood, with great views of the entire valley.

From the hall you enter a more unusual and evocative room: a hall with barrel vaults, columns and floor-to-ceiling windows with wrought-iron railing overlooking the valley. A room outside, also with sometimes ceiling and valley views, is currently a bathroom, but it could be reopened in the living area to create a gorgeous bar corner on the same floor there is also a service bathroom.

From the entrance opens the kitchen, and two other rooms overlooking the border of Civita Falconara. These two rooms were originally actually a very large room, divided in two by a large arch. This bow is still there: it was simply lined with axes to make a closet. Reopened, this would be an incredible dining room, which could, if you wish, open up to the kitchen.

The apartment consists of two wings perpendicular to each other. A wing has the entrance and the charming dining room; the other the sleeping area. This last part is currently configured with an extremely large bedroom, a second large bedroom and another room with a fireplace, all lined up, with windows overlooking the valley. A corridor (as wide as a small room) runs by their length at the back. The second bedroom and fireplace room were originally a single room, similar in size to the extremely large bedroom, and now separated from each other only by a false wall. These rooms could easily become two extremely refined bedrooms with en suite, along with a smaller bedroom plus bathroom, or a study/small family room etc.

With its unusual layout and stunning views, Apartment Melody has the potential to be a truly remarkable property.

ARPINO AND CIOCIARIA

Arpino, of Saturnie origin, was a very important fortified city of the Volsci, The Sannites and the Romans. This is evidenced by the imposing cyclo-pecological walls from which opens a door to acute sixth, unique in Europe. In 188 BC he obtained full Roman citizenship; the city expanded the territory, with Caio Mario the Arpinas ager enriched himself with possessions in Gaul. For centuries, since the early Middle Ages, it was the domain of numerous lords before being permanently part, after long disputes with the papacy, of the Kingdom of Naples. Until the unity of Italy has been thriving for the wool industry. Among the churches are that of St. Michael Archangel (sec. X), which preserves works by the Cavalier d’Arpino, of the Caravaggio School. In the church of St. Mary of Civita (sec. Xl) is kept the wooden statue of the Assumption (sec. X-XI), particularly

revered by the arpinates. The Monastery of St. Andrew the Apostle, one of the oldest Benedictine cloistered monasteries in the area, houses an ancient oil crucifix, under which a medieval specimen of a painted cross depicting the triumphant Christ on death has been found.

The Ciociaria is easily accessible from both Rome and Naples and their respective airports. A day of shopping in Rome is a common pastime, while an even shorter commute takes you to the enchanting beaches south of Rome. Alternatively, drive east, and the mountains of Abruzzo National Park await you with horseback trekking in the magnificent beeps, and sparkling lakes and mountain rivers where you can bathe in the heat of summer. And at the other end of the temperature, even if Arpino himself is temperate, less than an hour’s drive will get to the winter ski slopes.

Ciociaria remains largely a pristine gem with beautiful landscapes and medieval villages atop the hills. A house or second home in Ciociaria, in the hilly towns of Arpino, Veroli, Alatri or in the gentle countryside that surrounds them, will offer you an environment where over two thousand years of history combine with an idyllic Italian rural lifestyle, where you can still discover the “real” Italy and take time off from the crowded crowds of big tourist cities, despite being less than ninety minutes’ drive from the center of Rome.
