Description

Appartamento Aquila Romana (1) is one of only two apartments in a palazzo created centuries ago from an ancient monastery in the heart of the historic centre of Arpino, a medieval hilltop town. The palazzo is situated on the Via Aquila Romana (translated as the Street of the Roman Eagle), the medieval road built on the site of the old Roman road that 2000 years ago led from Arpino down through the valley to Rome.

Magnificent huge double entrance doors, hand-carved from centuries-old wood, open from the Via Aquila Romana into a lovely communal garden courtyard, which originally would have been the central courtyard of the monastery, enclosed by cloisters. A wide double flight of stone stairs sweeps up from the courtyard to two apartments, one of which is Via Aquila Romana (1)

The high double front doors of the apartment open to reveal an elegant entrance hall with a vaulted ceiling that stretches most of the length of the apartment. Leading off it, a charming, sunny morning room looks out over the courtyard.

The main salon is extremely large and beautifully-proportioned, with a very high antique wood-coffered ceiling. A stunning wrought-iron chandelier crafted for this room some 150 years ago can be purchased by separate contract.

At present, there are four further rooms beyond the salon (presently configured as bedrooms, gym etc), which originally comprised another grand salon, and can be laid out as you choose – adjacent plumbing allows for the creation of two or three bedrooms and bathrooms. Currently, all four rooms have false ceilings at a normal height, but high above this there is still the original ceiling, as in the main salon.

The kitchen is in an attractive separate room with a feature arch and a fireplace.

This section of the property connects through to what is presently configured as a separate apartment, but originally was all one grand apartment.

Here, a cosy sitting room with high arched ceilings and feature stone lintels opens through into a small dining area. To the left, a doorway topped with antique tiles leads to a breakfast nook, from which a high archway leads into the kitchen. A second sitting room features a fine hand-painted door.

The cream and rose bedroom has a particularly antique, solid wood door. The other bedroom is a very large double room, with a central arch and vaulted ceiling – currently used only for storage, it would make a stunning master bedroom.

Vaulted ceilings, original stone lintels and old hand painted tiles are particularly noteworthy features throughout this area of the property, which has its own separate street entrance located in a quiet side street leading from the Via Aquila Romana

Two separate rooms, originally part of the ancient monastery cloisters and opening off the communal courtyard garden, presently provide further storage but could be restored to provide additional recreational space.

While needing some modernisation and redecoration, Appartamento Aquila Romana (1) will provide a magnificent, elegant and historic home set in a medieval street, only a moment’s walk from Arpino’s main piazza, thus combining tranquillity with immediate access to cafés, bars, shops and services.

Excellent road access with nearby free public car parking.

This magnificent 300 sq.mt. property is the combination of two potentially separate but interconnecting apartments, listed separately as “Appartamento Via Aquila (2)” and “Appartamento Via Aquila Romana (3)”.

ARPINO AND THE CIOCIARIA
Arpino is one of the major medieval hilltop towns in the area of Italy called the Ciociaria, the name given to the fertile land that lies south of Rome but north of Naples, situated inland in the hills in the heart of Italy.

The Ciociaria region is within easy reach of both Rome and Naples and their respective airports. A day’s shopping in Rome is a common pastime, while an even shorter drive brings you to the charming beaches south of Rome. Alternatively, drive east, and the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park await with horse trekking in the magnificent beech forests, and sparkling mountain lakes and rivers where you can swim in the heat of the summer. And at the other extreme of temperature, although Arpino itself is temperate, less than an hour’s drive brings you to the winter ski slopes.

The Ciociaria remains largely an unspoilt gem with beautiful scenery and medieval hilltop towns. A home or second home in the Ciociaria, in the hilltop towns of Arpino, Veroli, Alatri or in the rolling countryside that surrounds them, will afford you a setting where over two thousand years of history combine with an idyllic rural Italian lifestyle, where you can still discover the ‘real’ Italy and take time out from the busy crowds of the larger tourist cities, while being less than ninety minutes journey from central Rome or either of Rome’s two airports.
